Dell Upgrades Consumer Linux PCs to Ubuntu 8.04

Anne B. Camden_July.18.2008_10:49 am

Hardy Heron has landed on select Dell consumer PCs! As of today consumers can purchase the XPS M1330N and Inspiron 1525N laptops and Inspiron 530N desktop with Ubuntu 8.04 pre-installed at www.dell.com/ubuntu.

So is there anything special about Ubuntu 8.04 on Dell PCs beyond a higher number? You bet! Dell spent months in development and testing to deliver more peripheral support - like ATI Video Graphics, Dell Wireless, Fingerprint Readers, HDMI, Bluetooth and MP3/WMA/WMV - which coincidentally were some of the more popular suggestions on Dell’s IdeaStorm. And of course DVD playback is still there, too.

As these Dell PCs with Ubuntu 8.04 pre-installed are available in a variety of countries, including U.S., Canada, select Latin America (like Mexico and Colombia), France, Germany, Spain and the U.K., we added another feature: the ability to select language during the first boot process. Just a few more steps toward making Linux more accessible by helping to ensure it “just works” right out of the box! For those who are interested in the nitty-gritty technical details, watch for a post from John Hull on Direct2Dell  in the near future.

Note: In Daniel Judd’s post, he mentions that Dell will soon expand its consumer Linux product portfolio to include the XPS M1530n and the new Studio 15n in time for LinuxWorld Stay tuned for more details!

Sounds promising, however I did not see hardly any choices and only entry level screen resolutions, integrated graphics, slow CPU’s let alone Montevina, and basically very few options to choose from. Hope that changes.

I have been waiting for several weeks for the upgrade but more specifically I was expecting to see the Penryn processor family which are supported in the EU ubuntu dell websites. Are there plans to roll the new Intel processors out in the US in the near future — for Ubuntu pre-installed XPS 1330?

Any chance it will be available in Australia? I am looking at getting a lap top but not a Vista one, I simply don’t want Vista, the TCO is too high.

Now what about expanding availibility to rest of the europe? Like to the birthplace of Linux, Finland!

I’ve been waiting for these Ubuntu machines since they were announced - and a year later not a single word of other countries. I need a new computer already, guess I’ll settle then with Lenovo with SLED since those are available here.

Kudos for includlign codecs, alot of FOSS-people don’t understand that people *really* want this out of the box.

If you get this to Norway there’s a great chance I’d buy it. :)

    Dear Anne Camden,

no Dell ubuntu linux in Brazil?? why is that?

Brazil is a *huge* linux market with a strong history of deploying open-source software and formats. see recent Brazil’s backing of open document formats ODF specs at ISO, large ubuntu communities and self-support at http://www.ubuntu-br.org/ and the mind-boggling deployment of 52 million KDE-desktop linux seats for students: http://lwn.net/Articles/280419/

look at this Register’s article: (Brazil loves LINUX: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/03/05/brazil_loves_linux_true/) “Brazil is the world’s most enthusiastic exponent of open source software, a BBC report reveals. And, if the Latin-American love affair with Linux continues, a third of machines there may soon run non-MS OSes.”

Dell Brazil unfortunately is not following this trend. Indeed, after seeing this ubuntu 8.04 news from Dell, I’ve just phoned Dell Brazil and asked for a Ubuntu laptop and the attendants (and their supervisor) were really gross to me, *refusing* to sell me the laptop with Ubuntu or even without any OS at all! What kind of seller refuses to sell something??? I believe you can guess my next laptop in Brazil will *not* be a Dell. That’s unfortunate, because I like Dell’s hardware, but I like Linux much more.

Dell, evolve to Ubuntu in Brazil or be sidelined. I expect you to announce Ubuntu in Brazil very soon.

I came close to purchasing a Dell Inspiron desktop with Ubuntu 8.04 pre-installed recently from the Dell UK web site, however eventually decided instead to build my own machine. Had Dell offered higher end graphics card options, I would have gone with Dell. The rest of the Inspiron 530 UK offering has an excellent specification (or at least, can be upgraded at the time of purchase to have such), however why the lack of availability of anything other than an entry level graphics card?

It is really good when Dell upgrade Ubuntu 8.04, I think this is a way to make computer cheaper and better, as we know Ubuntu is one of the best Linux system, that why I think Ubuntu will satisfy everybody using computer for their work. I like Ubuntu, but now I use Mac OS X Leopard for my Laptop and Ubuntu for my Desktop, I try to master both of them. I like Ubuntu and Mac OS X Leopard. I think Dell will success with Ubuntu.

To the person in Brazil: perhaps you should move to Argentina. Dell Argentina has been offering Ubuntu preloaded systems since March.

    See Dell.com.ar or here http://www1.la.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/es/ubuntu?c=ar&cs=ardhs1&l=es&s=dhs&~ck=anavml

I think the best move that was added by Dell is multimedia formats (i.e. mp3, wmv codecs, etc) to the PC. What would be BETTER is if you actually said this on the site. Outside of this new addition, I didn’t feel a need to purchase a new PC. Now I will because I KNOW that their is now this support added to the OS. ADVERTISE THIS!!!!!!!!! IT IS A GREAT THING DELL!!!!!!!! This is one of the main complaints of using Linux. Advertise this support!
