Free, But Watch For A Catch

Friday, October 17th, 2008

There are some online sites that seem appropriate for kids, but upon further inspection let them, and their parents, down. I am referring to free sites that host Flash and Java games. The issue is that you can’t always tell right away if a site is appropriate for your child because of the rotating banner ads.

banner Ad Say you search for free games. Many sites will come up. You select a site that looks ok because the games appear to be kid friendly.  Great, now you feel comfortable and your child is having a little fun.  But, suddenly a banner ad pops up with an adult-rated advertisement!  Then you think to yourself, “How could I have let this happen!  I checked to make sure it was safe!”

Because these sites are free, they are ad supported.  People of all ages like to play games online.  Banner ads will rotate to offer a variety of products for different target audiences.  They are also not invulnerable to malicious hackers. That is what makes it very difficult to conclude right off if your child should be playing a game on a particular site. It was reported on Washingtonpost.com that the popular Neopets site had this problem, apparently the result of malicious software. They have since corrected the issue.

It is always best that you first check out free game sites.  Make sure you feel comfortable with the games and the ads that show up. Keep in mind there are many fun, kid-friendly sites. You will find one that you and your child can feel good about.

Less is More? That’s What Game Developers Seem to Think

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Spore was released this week in the U.S., but the marketing campaign for the game has been happening for months.  On Sept. 6, Spore’s marketing team did something very unique. In San Francisco’s Union Square,  EA set up one of the world’s tiniest billboards on the roof of one of the buildings, and placed a telescope on the ground where people could step up to view it. At 14″ by 6″, the sign’s details are too small to be viewed with the naked eye from the ground.

Sony, maker of the up and coming game “Little Big Planet” for PlayStation, has now launched a similar “tiny billboard” campaign across the U.S. The billboards are roughly the same size as the Spore billboard in Union Square, complete with a tiny ladder, working lights and a miniscule walkway seemingly prepared to accommodate 6″ tall people. Each sign is numbered in series, apparently hinting at a limited 1,000-unit run. Sony has planted these signs in various places in major cities across the country, and is encouraging people to swipe them. An interesting conversation about this can be seen on the forums of Rotten Tomatoes.

One of the lucky owners of a tiny Little Big Planet billboard has already put his up for sale on eBay. If you’re interested in making a bid, or just want to check it out, feel free to drop by his auction.

Why would gaming advertisers go to these lengths to get attention? Amidst the cacophony in marketing today, each individual message is becoming less and less effective.

The average consumer today is inundated by a wall of advertising. According to J. Walker Smith of Yankelovich, the average urban citizen is bombarded by 3,000-5,000 advertisements per day. The results of this marketing frenzy are counter to the aims of the advertisers: most people have developed a resistance to advertising out of necessity. When 5,000 voices are all screaming at once, it’s difficult to make out what any individual voice is saying, and let’s face it: 5,000 voices all vying for your attention is pretty blasted annoying. Here is an interesting article regarding the future of marketing for those who are interested.

The Web is a form of media that is becoming increasingly more user friendly. The average Web surfer has more power than ever to customize their user experience. For instance, in 2006, it was estimated that 71% of all PCs had pop-up blocking software installed, up from the estimated 20% in 2004. People are filtering out, psychologically and directly, the veritable avalanche of advertisements piling upon them every day.

What’s a marketer to do, then? Less is more, apparently, and the more engaging and interesting and the less intrusive an advertiser can make his message, the more lauded and effective his campaign will be. I have to give kudos to EA and Sony for these brilliant campaigns. If the campaigns themselves are indicative of how creative the games are, I can’t wait to check out the games!

Dell signs Major Pan-European Sponsorship With MTV

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Who will take home a gong for best video this year? And will you get a chance to see it all unfold live, in-person? This year’s MTV Europe Music Awards combine all the things pop-culture fans love — music, video, technology … and you.

Dell is excited to be a principal sponsor of the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards - the perfect partnership that both celebrates the artists and their work - and the technology that enables individuals to bring their passions to life. Technology and music go hand-in-hand. Many of us use our laptops or desktops to store MP3s, play music CDs, or get our music fix on Rhapsody.  Others create and edit their own compositions using computers. Whatever your passion - Dell plays a role in enabling individuals to express themselves and to pursue their passions.

UK fans, keep a look out here for how you can be a part of the experience of the MTV Europe Music Awards in Liverpool first-hand. You just might turn your friends green with envy as you get up-close-and-personal with the red carpet.

We Hear You Loud and Clear: Update on the Inspiron Mini 9 Promotion

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Thanks for alerting us to difficulties in finding information on the promotion on dell.com. Hard feedback to hear in some cases, but we’re committed to clearing things up.

The most direct path to ordering one of the select laptop models bundled with the Inspiron Mini 9 is:

 http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/sale_laptops?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

There’s a “Dell 3-Day Laptop Sale” banner at the top of the page and the four laptop options below. Click on the system you’re interested in and, as part of the laptop order configuration process, a line item for an Ubuntu version of the Inspiron Mini 9 for $99 will be added automatically when you check out through the aforementioned e-value codes — that’s the only way to order the laptops bundled with the Mini. You can also order the laptop system you configured from this page without ordering the Mini.

The promotion ends at 6 a.m. CT on Monday, Sept. 8. The Inspiron Mini 9 ships separately from the laptop system purchased.

Order status can be checked at any time by visiting http://www.dell.com/orderstatus.  Dell will only accept returns and order cancellations of both units.

Again, thanks for the feedback. We hear you.

Artist Kira Willey, Dell and the Inspirational Song “Colors”

Friday, July 25th, 2008

It’s creating quite a stir online and on the air, and once you’ve heard the song you will be whistling the tune wherever you go.

Kira Willey is the wonderful artist behind the song “Colors,”  the inspirational track that can be heard in the new Dell commercial showcasing the many customizations that can be configured for Dell computers. Kira is the founder of Fireflies Yoga and creator of the CD “Dance for the Sun,” an award-winning yoga album for kids that includes the track found in the video.

Copywriter Bobby Hershfield, part of the Mother, NY creative team behind the commercial spot, had this to say about choosing the song:

We wanted to find a song that communicated a person’s relationship with their computer. Since the spot shows how a computer is an extension of a person, we wanted the song to reinforce that idea in an interesting and engaging way.

What we loved about “Colors” was two fold. We love first the melody and tone. It eased you into the images and had a nice emotional quality to it. Secondly, we loved the lyrics that colors matched a mood. That a person could feel differently one day to the next. We thought that was a nice metaphor for Dell, whose family of computers contain different styles, patterns, colors, and features. The song with the images really reinforced the idea that there is a Dell for everyone.

We came across the song through our editor, who had found it during a search. As he was editing the spot he thought the song worked well with the imagery and gave the spot overall a nice quality to it.

We couldn’t be happier with the way it all turned out

I was fortunate enough to chat with Kira and gather more information on the song and her background as an artist.

CB: Where were you born, and where do you currently reside?

KW: I was born in Boston, and grew up all over New England. My husband and I now live in eastern Pennsylvania with our two young children.

CB: I understand from a young age and throughout high school, your passion was playing the violin.  Looking back, did you always see a career for yourself in music?

KW: I’ve played music since I was five years old, when I began the Suzuki method of violin. In recitals I played Twinkle Twinkle next to now world-famous violinist Joshua Bell! Although I didn’t know music would become my career until after college, it’s always been a huge part of my life. Even when I had a “real job” and wasn’t working in music, I loved that I could speak the language with other musicians, and was always grateful for that lifelong musical education.

I have a large family, and almost everyone is very musical—lots of singers and instrumentalists. My brother, who sings bass on three tracks on my CD, and my dad are fantastic singers. And my cousin Beau Lisy co-produced the album and is an amazing percussionist and drummer.

CB: What was your inspiration for creating “Dance for the Sun?”

KW: I was living in New York City, teaching music to young children, and began practicing yoga at around the same time. I eventually got certified to teach yoga to kids, and the natural way for me to teach—and a very effective way, as it turned out–was to sing and use lots of rhythm. I created Fireflies Musical Yoga for Kids, and “Dance for the Sun” evolved for the most part out of the songs I wrote to use in my classes. I had no idea that the CD and its concept of teaching musical yoga to kids would connect so well with families and become so popular, but I’m certainly glad it has.

CB: How did the song “Colors” come about?

KW: I had wanted to do a song about colors for a while, and felt like it was almost too simple. But I realized after I wrote it that it has a few different levels of meaning: the literal one, which kids really connect to because colors are so directly related to their world—all kids have a strong opinion about their favorite colors! But it also describes the different moods we all have and how we can feel lots of different ways at once, which is important for kids to recognize and learn that that’s OK. And even on another level, in the line “all the colors of the world are in me,” I was going for the idea that even though we’re all different kinds of people, we’re more alike than we are different. It can really mean whatever anyone wants it to mean.

CB: When did you think when Dell contacted you about using your music?

KW: It was a bolt out of the blue–I was excited about it, particularly about the potential of my music connecting with a broader audience.

CB: The new commercial is beautiful, and the song fits very well.  What does your family think now that your music can be heard online and on TV?

KW: Everyone’s really thrilled, and lots of people — some I know but most I don’t — are contacting me wanting to know more about the music, which is great.

CB: Do you have any plans or projects on the horizon?

KW: I’ll continue to teach Fireflies Yoga classes, give workshops and master classes, and perform kids’ yoga concerts—we did one in Bryant Park, NYC last weekend which was a blast. I’m hoping to spread the joy and benefits of kids’ yoga to a much wider audience using TV; we just finished developing a script for a children’s music and yoga TV show. I write a kids’ yoga blog for iyogalife.com, and I’m revamping my Web site with lots of videos, photos and new songs. I am also writing new songs all the time, hoping to record some of them very soon. So I’ve got lots going on!
