Higher Quality Reviews on Dell.com from People Like You

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

customer Spotlight Some of my colleagues over at Dell.com are ratcheting up the focus on customer ratings and reviews with a new twist called Customer Spotlight. While Dell has been publishing your ratings and reviews of our laptops and desktops for a while, it is hoped that the new Customer Spotlight reviews will be even more engaging and personal because they feature photos of the reviewer with his or her system.

Check out the live example here and let us know what you think. Better yet, tell us the pros and cons of your Dell system and send us a photo to include with your review. Go here to find out how easy it can be.

Many thanks in advance from Dell, and other customers who just may need exactly what you’re using.

Promise Pink PCs – More Than Just a Color

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Virtually each of us has or will be touched in some way by breast cancer. That’s why I am pleased and proud to report that, starting today, Dell will donate $5 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every purchase of a Promise Pink Mini, laptop or Studio Hybrid, with a minimum donation of $250,000 in 2009.

Pink is one of our top color options, so the new Promise Pink program should be aMini 9 Pink popular and passionate way to help raise money for breast cancer research and community programs for breast health education and screening. We are actively listening to you through Dell communities like IdeaStorm — and Komen for the Cure is a cause the community is passionate about supporting.

Promise Pink is available in the Inspiron Mini 9 and Mini 12, as well as the Inspiron 1525, Studio 15, Studio 17, Studio Hybrid, XPS M1330, XPS M1530 and Latitude E4200.

Dell Outlet Exclusive Twitter Deals

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Dell Outlet ventured into the social media world in early 2007 when it launched the first Dell Twitter property, Twitter.com/DellOutlet. The idea was to offer information on new Dell Outlet product arrivals and special offer info, plus be a resource for customer to ask questions and provide comments.

Since the launch, @DellOutlet has attracted a huge following. Today, over 13,000 followers receive updates from Dell Outlet via the Twitter posts. In response, Dell Outlet is now beginning to post more regular Twitter-exclusive offers in addition to keeping the community apprised of general specials and updates. And the response is overwhelming! View the Direct2Dell post by Bob Pearson and what TechCrunch has to say about it all.

New Dell Products at CES 2009

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Earlier this morning at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Alex Gruzen, Senior VP, Global Consumer Product Group, and Ed Boyd, VP, Consumer Experience Design Group, discussed highlights of 2008 and introduced some new products.

Speaking of those, Dell made the  Studio XPS laptops official by introducing the Studio XPS 16 and Dell Studio XPS 13 Laptopthe Studio XPS 13. Both laptops combine stunning industrial  design with state-of-the-art technology. First, the Studio XPS 16 – not only gorgeous, but an immersive cinematic experience with 16:9 full HD display and Dolby audio. And the Studio XPS 13 proves that beauty and elegance are more than skin deep with optional industry-first Hybrid SLI technology, delivering choice of boosting performance or conserving battery life. Less is Better with Laptop, Desktop Packaging

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Customers like blogger John Platt are starting to take notice that Dell is serious about cutting down the packaging materials for the thousands of desktops and laptops we ship every day.

Bottom line: We believe we can reduce our packaging by about 20 million pounds over the next four years and help other organizations achieve their green goals with a new Web-based tool called Dell Greenprint Advisor.

Personally, I saw a big difference in the Studio 15 laptop my daughter received over the holidays compared with the Inspiron my wife ordered a few months earlier. If you’ve noticed the difference, we’d like to hear from you.

Bright and Bountiful – Dell Adds Color and Surprise to the Holiday Mix

Monday, November 10th, 2008

The usual ferment of speculation about the holiday retail landscape is in full swing, and Dell has a great story to tell with the up-tempo rhythm of award-winning new consumer products Dell has achieved this year continuing through this holiday season. Consider just a few of the recent and upcoming launches:

· We’ve updated the Studio 15 (starting at $599) and Studio 17 (starting at $749) laptops – both inside and out. We’ve added Centrino 2, plus a few other cool features like a gestures touch pad that enables circular scrolling and zoom and RGB LED display (Studio 17 only).

· And, from a personalization perspective tomorrow we will expand out Art House series options from Mike Ming to include three unique (PRODUCT) RED artwork (additional $75) choices from three very cool artists. Each purchase of a Studio laptop with the (PRODUCT) RED artwork donates $20 to the Global Fund and is connected directly to saving lives in the fight to eliminate AIDS in Africa.

· Speaking of (PRODUCT) RED, we just updated our XPS One – adding a 24-inch full HD display and a special 65W Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 quad core processor, and a new color –Pure White (which is actually (PRODUCT) RED).

· One of the “hottest” products available today is the very cool Studio Hybrid, Dell’s greenest consumer PC. It’s small (80% smaller than typical desktop minitower) and uses up to 70% less energy. Since its small size allows for it to be put in more visible locations, you can also personalize it with color or bamboo or leather sleeves.

· The Inspiron 13 is truly an unsung hero in our product portfolio. While it comes in one color, that Pacific Blue is a serious head turner. More importantly – where else can you get a sleek, sexy thin and light that weighing around 4.5 lbs with starting price of $649? This is a student’s dream machine.

· Inspiron Mini 9 ($starting at $349) and Mini 12: Certainly the Mini 9 has been well received – both the XP and the Dell-customized Ubuntu versions. The Mini 12, announced on Oct. 26, will be available on dell.com very, very soon.

· Traveling to the other end of the product spectrum – gaming – we recently announced that the Alienware Aurora desktop is available in 200 Best Buy stores and on bestbuy.com. We’ve also launched our first quad core gaming laptop – the Alienware M17.

· Next week we will expand our desktop portfolio with four systems based on the new Core i7 architecture. Three of the four systems will target gamers who tend to appreciate the latest and greatest performance technology. The fourth system is unique – it is NOT targeted toward gamers but instead should appeal to the more advanced digital divas (or those who aspire to be such), and given it’s sub-$1,000 starting price point, it should be on the list of those who are looking to purchase a PC that will be relevant for the foreseeable future.

As far as speculation about Zing goes, the interest in Dell’s digital entertainment strategy is encouraging, but there is significant confusion and misinformation in the blogosphere and in press reports about it. As we said a few months ago, our strategy focuses on content offerings and delivery platforms that mix Zing software, remote access and pre-configured media bundles across all of our devices, including licensing agreements with entertainment distributors. It has never been about a music player.

Dell’s approach extends personalization beyond the box and into delivering exceptional content and experiences. The innovative Music & Movies bundles we launched a few weeks ago are clear and promising examples of what’s happening at Dell in digital entertainment. We’re very proud of our emerging role as a change agent, so stay tuned as we continue to generate new ideas and new approaches to personalization.

Restyling a Classic

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

How do you follow up on a headline-grabbing design introduced by Karolina Kurkova? Go bigger, brighter, bolder — and add a subwoofer.

Dell today kicked off a season of great products, great designs and great deals with the launch of the XPS One 24. Available in the U.S. starting at $1,699, the updated design boasts a 24-inch, edge-to-edge 1080p HD display and premium JBL dual stereo speakers for immersive entertainment experiences.

The XPS One 24 integrates an array of features, including HDTV, DVR, optional Blu-ray Disc player and recorder, component stereo system, video phone, and media library.

xPS One 24

In addition to the larger display and premium sound capabilities, the XPS One 24 features NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video graphics for eye-popping visuals and Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 quad core processor to easily handle complex multimedia activities.

You can check out some first impressions at DesktopReview.com.

And this season, white is the new (RED). Dell offers two Pure White XPS One 24 (PRODUCT) RED configurations, a version with Windows Vista Home Premium starting $1,699 and one starting at $2,299 featuring Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED and other upgrades. Each purchase of an XPS One 24 (PRODUCT) RED system contributes $50-$80 (depending on the configuration) to the Global Fund. To place that in perspective, a $50 contribution can provide nearly four months of life-saving treatment for an individual living with HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Dell’s also launched the new www.dell.com/everyday Web site, a one-stop holiday shopping destination for daily deals and personalization ideas. Be the first to know about the deal of the day via tweets at http://twitter.com/DellEveryday , or check out the Everyday Deals Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dell-Everyday-Deals/56260914096. Lights, Camera, Action! Movies and Music Now Pre-Loaded on Your New Dell PC

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

For 23 years, Dell has been the leader in “configure-to-order.” When you by a desktop or laptop from dell.com you are in charge of your destiny – at least this small part of it. You can pick and choose any number of components. For some, this is the only way they will buy a PC.

Last year, Dell took that ability to customize a PC and added a “personalize” twist – you can still choose what goes “under the hood” but better yet you can also select your “paint job,” be it Flamingo Pink, Midnight Blue, or Mike Ming’s “Red Swirl.” Response has been enthusiastic – on average, seven out of every 10 laptops that ship out are a color other than basic black.

So, how can we improve on this whole “Yes! It’s mine!” theme?

Dell_movie_module

Today, only on Dell.com, you now have the option of getting favorite music and movies pre-loaded on your new desktop or laptop. We’ve teamed up with some entertainment industry giants: Universal Music, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Warner Bros., etc. to create “hand-picked” music and movies bundles that can seed an instant  digital library. No need to download or rip CDs – it’s there the very first time you boot up your computer – just click on the “music” or “movie” icons on the Dell Dock and voila! your music and movies listings appear, neatly organized and ready to play! And here’s another thought – with a starting price of $25 for 50 songs, you get twice the music for your money versus other music services. The movie bundles are a bargain too – three (or four) movies, starting at $25. The bundles are grouped by series (e.g. all of the Matrix movies) or by genre – comedy (Who can resist the Blue Steel pose?), romantic comedy, and children’s movie bundles.

For those of you interested in some of the more seminal details: the pre-installed music are DRM-free MP3s, and so will play on the software or hardware player of your choice. The movies on the other hand are licensed – and this is where our other team member, CinemaNow, plays an important part: CinemaNow handles license management. The first time you play a movie, the system will contact CinemaNow and acquire the license to the movie. I strongly encourage you to do this for a couple of reasons – think of it as proof of purchase. Should something happen (heaven forbid) and you “lose” your movie, by having registered the license you have access to a backup. This leads to the second reason –with the license you can also transfer the movie to other PCs and devices – the number depends on the movies / studio – so read the fine print for more details on that.

clip_image001

Let’s see – anything else? Oh yeah, this is only the beginning. I know some of you are going to look at the bundles and think that maybe these selections aren’t quite up your alley. (What? You haven’t really checked out the nitty-gritty details just yet? Head to www.dell.com/musicandmovies now.) We understand this is about you – reflecting your tastes, your passions, your secret indulgences. We will be regularly adding to and refreshing our selections, and of course looking forward to hearing about what you’d like to see in the future.

(BTW, I’ve seen the “roadmap” and by the end of this year I expect we’ll “make you an offer you can’t refuse.”)
