Sew Not Just for the Retired Chic Geek

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

When my friends are at the most happening parties in town, I am home doing my due diligence as a chic geek–experiencing technology at its finest by exploring the industry’s most surprising gadget. The sewing machine. Yes, you read right. The sewing machine. I sew, embroider, hem, pintuck, couch, ruffle and dabble in quilting and I am far from retirement. After attending a few sewing classes, I saw quickly that I am not a lone wolf for my generation.

My mother — an avid sewing IT professional, which also makes her far from the stereotypical sewer — bought me a Bernina on my 24th birthday.  With no disrespect to the incredible embroidery my grandmother did or all of the Halloween costumes my mother made for me, it felt like a gift for the elderly. In response to my surprise, my mother told me something that could not have been more spot on –the technology in these machines is exciting and makes sewing so easy and addictive, that I would fall in love with sewing. She was right.

So what has the sewing industry done to make this old world hobby have new world appeal? Pack in serious technology. The same kind of technology we want in our PCs. Let’s take the new Bernina 830 for example, as it is the first thing I will buy if I win the lotto.

The high-res 7″ touch screen has brilliant colors and large icons for navigation. You can even drag and drop stitches to put them in sewing order. If the power goes out while you’re embroidering, the patented “Module with Brains” knows how and where to pick up so you don’t lose a stitch or ruin your design. The software is Microsoft Window’s based and comes with many embroidery designs to choose from, including word art. And if you don’t like the choices that come with the machine, have no fear. Just start up your Dell and create your own, through the Art Design software.

Talk about personalization! With these PC dream features, Bernina and others have brought sewing up to state-of-art technology and arguably a little beyond.  And now on to my obsession with fabric, as seen by my closet full of bolts. Has fabric caught up to technology, too? Stay tuned later this week for a post by Jennifer.

Will the Olympics Melt the Internet?

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

That’s the headline atop Tom Steinert-Threlkeld’s ZDNet column today. He’s quoting a well-placed source as saying we’re about to find whether the Internet can, or will, break down under the strain of all that video streaming from Beijing starting tomorrow. So what are the odds? Check it out here.

Extreme Ways to Lose the Snooze Button

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

For all you anti-morning people out there who can’t help but snooze your alarms – hope is not lost. Thanks to some new gadgets that add a whole new dimension to the word “annoying,” the snooze button could be a thing of the past.

The Tyrant alarm clock makes sure that extra 15 minutes of sleep is out of the question for all but the most irresponsible.  Sure, you can snooze if you like, but you’ll see some unwanted outgoing calls listed on your phone bill.  Let me explain.  This loud-mouthed alarm clock randomly makes an outgoing call from your cell phone contact list for every three minutes you continue to sleep past your planned wake-up time.

Want to make sure you rise and shine without pestering your friends, family and associates?  Don’t worry – there’s another creative albeit fiendish alarm clock that is sure to do the job.

Enter Clocky.  This innovative alarm clock goes off with a high-pitched shriek.  If that doesn’t get both feet on the floor, Clocky careens off your nightstand with the encoded resolve of a Terminator robot, and wheels around the room, screeching incessantly,  until you get out of bed, chase it down and turn it off.

Think these gadgets are a bit too extreme?  Well, if annoying, shrieking, robotic alarm clocks can’t persuade you to stop snoozing, maybe this might.  60 Minutes recently aired an episode called “The Science of Sleep” that profiles the latest findings on sleep research.  The segment pretty much states the obvious – sleep deprivation is bad, humans need about eight hours a night, etc.  What was interesting, and what may push us to get out of bed faster, is that snoozing doesn’t help – it might even make you sleepier – which completely contradicts the reason why we snooze in the first place!

Whether you wake up to a long list of outgoing calls on your cell phone, or to the sound of a shrieking mobile robot, just make sure you wake up – the snooze button never really did the trick anyway.

Technology to Tri

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

I admit, I am not an experienced tri-athlete, in fact, just the opposite.  I’ve been training for my FIRST triathlon for the past several months.  In this time, I have found some cool gadgets that are perfect for beginners.

Let’s start with the essentials - a heart rate monitor!  I had not exercised in a while and literally did not know the difference between pushing myself and killing myself.  The heart rate monitor basically told me when I was working hard, not hard enough, or too hard for too long.  I love this!  First I tried the Nike Imara monitor because I liked the design and the price tag.  Unfortunately, after about a month, the monitor strap connection broke.  I then purchased the Polar F6.  I chose this one because it came in my favorite color – green!  This thing actually displays a weekly summary of all my calories burned – cool stuff!

While the heart rate monitor is for all activities, it helped me the most with running.  For cycling, I found two cool things.  The first is www.bikely.com.  This site allows you to build out a bike route and estimates your mileage.  You can also check out other people’s routes or choose to share the ones you’ve created.  While I was on my routes, I discovered that having a cyclometer is fundamental. It’s great to know how far I’ve cycled, and when I am getting tired, it’s even better to know how far I have left to go!  I found this great review of the Cateye Strada that I use that has all the details about it.

I have only a few days left before my first event and am already planning my second one.  I think I finally found a sport that will keep me interested, but will likely always look for fun new gadgets.  Perhaps something new for me to listen to “Tango” by Shakira as I swim!

Are you a beginner who has found some great products to share?  How about any experienced tri-athletes with words of advice?  Look forward to hearing from you!

“Techno-Tots” and the Digital Life

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

This August, my wife and I will celebrate our son’s 3rd birthday.  Being he is our first child, we like most parents strive to provide the best in everything for him.  We also realize that our son is growing up in an age that is vastly more technologically advanced than the one my wife and I experienced.

I remember playing Pong (yes, I’m dated), our first “color” TV (amazing), and being mesmerized by the game Simon.  However my son is growing up with Wii, XBox 360 and Playstation 3.  Not to mention computers, cell phones and HDTV.  I must admit I’m a bit jealous.  If only these devices were around when I was a kid.

I’ve dubbed this next generation “Techno-Tots,” and this series of occasional posts will focus on children growing up in this wonderful Digital Life of today.

While doing research for the series, I came across an article from Forbes: “Coolest Gadgets for Kids.”  It featured the Wow Wee Robosapien.

My son loves it!  And while I reviewed the instruction manual, he quickly had the robot performing tricks before I could figure out which buttons to push.  And all this before the ripe age of 3.  While new to me, he seemed incredibly comfortable with the remote control.  So who is teaching who in this digital age?

If you have ideas for “Techno-Tots” posts, I’d like to hear from you.  Until then, I’ll try and wrestle the remote from my son and have *him* show *me* how it works.

Follow me on Twitter @ChrisBatDell.

PS: Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!!!

Vista Tip: Use Snipping Tool for Screen Captures

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Vista’s Snipping Tool is a cool little app that I use just about every day. Its purpose is to grab screen captures from anything within Vista. Unlike using ALT + PrintScreen which takes a snapshot of an active window, the Snipping tool lets you easily grab a portion of the a window, web page, your desktop etc.

Basically, using it you can capture any part of your screen that you want to. This example is part of a page from Media Center:

Mia's Pics

If you’re running Vista, here’s how to start using it. Just click the Windows Vista button at the bottom left of your desktop and search for Snipping Tool. Typically, the only thing you might want to change is the default border ink color, which is red (click Options, then look for Ink Color and choose the default color you want from the drop down). I use white since I’m usually posting these images to Direct2Dell.

Using the tool itself is pretty simple too. When you first launch, it pulls up a little dialog box on your screen. From there just move your mouse to the top left corner of what you want to capture, hold your main mouse button down, then drag your cursor to expand the capture window. Release the button, and it will pop that screenshot into the Snipping Tool where you can save it as a variety of graphic formats. If you mess up on the capture, just click New and start over. After a couple of tries, you’ll be grabbing screens like a pro.
