Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Friday, April 10th, 2009

I recently met several of the Wal-Mart Eleven Moms at a discussion in Austin. They shared some great thoughts on the purchasing power of moms. Their readers are often moms who make the decisions on what to buy for themselves, children and their homes. Let’s not forget all the kid birthday parties, too!cyber Sisterhood Yesterday, I shared another takeaway from that discussion — about the term “Mommy Blogger.” Check out Mommy Blogging - The Way I Understand It on Direct2Dell and share your thoughts on the subject.

Geek Sugar has a great How-To this week on Converting Files on the Web with Media Converter. This free conversion service is an easy way to convert a YouTube video into an MP3.

Audrey at Mom Generations is sharing 365 Days of Fashion Advice that has some very realistic ideas. Yesterday’s post includes a video on How to wear a sweater wrap – very helpful!

Have you ever tried Cyber Squats? Check out 10 ways to get fit while you’re glued to the computer.

Practically Posh on Dell Lounge

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

I was checking out the Dell Lounge and came across Practically Posh. This fun series from Robyn Moreno will give a 12-week tutorial clip_image001showing women how to stand out from the crowd and develop their own personal style — even if their cash flow is low. Robyn is the author of Practically Posh: The Smart Girl’s Guide to a Glam Life and has written fashion, travel and lifestyle articles for many magazines.

You can visit the site directly or sign up for an RSS Feed to enjoy these discussions. Robyn explores everything from “cankles” to a recipe for an Orange Yogurt Mask. Check it out and have fun!

It’s the season of change and there have been some BIG changes to Dell Lounge. If you’ve haven’t visited the site lately, it might be time for you to take another trip and see what’s new.

clip_image001

Once you start looking around, you will notice a lot of new features and functionality have been added to the site. One of the coolest new features allows you to search, tag and comment on your favorite content, then subscribe to custom RSS feeds to get instant updates on the stuff you care about. Want the latest in music, style, tech and more? Just visit and explore and make Dell Lounge all yours.

We’ve also added unique channels like Motherboard – our new collaboration with Vice and a must-see for tech revolutionaries everywhere – and even some original series of our own like fashion-savvy fare Practically Posh, Style on Stage and the Canvas artist series and hip entertainment like Film Gods and Dead Venues Live.

Not only has the Dell Lounge Web site received a makeover, but we have also branched out into other social media sites recently. Make sure you visit our Dell Lounge Facebook, Dell Myspace and Dell Lounge Twitter accounts as well.

Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

If you like arts and crafts as much as I do, you might want to read this article from Popgadget: Soon your Wii could teach you to knit (really).

A new study reveals that Girls Have The Edge In New Technologies, finding also that that 50 per cent of children chose their mothers to help them to use new technologies.

Chip Chick found a USB accessory that I might actually wear: USB Jewel Bracelet with style, 8GB of storage and a low price tag to boot!

Cool new site: Yojo Mama claims to take the guesswork out of finding nearby child-friendly restaurants, toy stores, kids clothing stores, diaper-changing stations, shopping deals, fun events, playgrounds and more — all based on your current location, neighborhood or city.

If you work out regularly, you’ll notice that two of a chic geek’s most prized possessions, a heart monitor and a pedometer, are less than fashionable. With the usual choices of everything in drone gray or generic black, it’s hard to show any fashion sense through these monitoring must-haves. To change the up market and offer more choices, Tanita Japan, a manufacturer most known for its scales and other health equipment, will soon be selling its jeweled and flashy FB-720-ZT line of pedometers.

clip_image002

Not only are they fun, they’re also practical and loaded with some great features, including a three-dimensional sensor and seven-day memory to properly log every step. To be honest, those are about the only two features I use on my current pedometer. I once spent a lot of money to buy a top-of-the-line pedometer and heart monitor in efforts to take my health more seriously, only to use less than half of the features that came with them. Ugh! We’ve all made those kinds of technology buying mistakes, haven’t we?

With the right features and a little bit of style, it’s finally a tech-cessory for the exercising chic geek that doesn’t bring down the wardrobe. The choice of styles and designs will allow for almost every kind of workout chic geek to find their style and display it proudly.

Looking forward to your thoughts and comments.

“And They Call It, Robot Love …”

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Definitely an emerging trend in technology, tech-cessories and now in fashion around the world is the robot. Why? I’m not sure. But robot fever has seemed to spread everywhere. Maybe it was R2D2 and C-3PO in Star Wars that kicked off the robot look. Or maybe it was last season’s robot fashion by designer Thierry Mugler’s, spotted by Boing Boing, that spurred the imagination of the rest of the industry:

clip_image002

Whatever the origin, it’s a hot and emerging trend and one I believe we will see much more of.

Geek Sugar posted a great slideshow on “12 Robot Goodies You’ll Love,” which got me thinking about all of the other robot tech-cessories finds I have stumbled upon over the last couple of months. Here are just a few of my favorites:

clip_image004

On the far left is the Minoru 3D Robot Webcam, found by New Launches. Anything that takes video in 3D, robotic or not, is pretty fancy schmancy in my book. Middle top are the Robot Cuff Links from www.conranusa.com. A must for the male robot wannabe. Bottom middle is the cute and cartoony Red robot laptop skin from findgift.com. And last but not least to your far right is my favorite…looks like a stuffed animal but is really a laptop sleeve from Barny’s Farm. There is truly a little something out there for robot lovers of all kinds. And since that group seems to be growing, it will be interesting to see what pops up next.

Yes, robots are sort of cute, but a little creepy to me as well. And I have to admit that I don’t get this trend or feel strong affinity for it, but I’m staying open minded on this one. To all of you robot lovers out there, please help me understand the fascination!

Looking forward to your thoughts and comments.

Sharing Your Love for Fashion Just Got More Fun

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Recently I was catching up with my Google reader and happened upon a post from Geek Sugar, one of the many tech sites I follow. The post was based around a contest for an Apple 3G iPhone, but I was more interested in their online shopping site ShopStyle. Since it was lunch time (and yes, I was sadly eating alone in my cube) I decided to check it out. Unlike other online shopping aggregator sites I’ve looked at (Shop It To Me, Bluefly.com), ShopStyle goes beyond just shopping to include style trends, celeb fashion and social networking that help users create, share and shop for personalized looks.

As you browse the site you can add items to your stylebook, click through to the retail site, share them and set up a price alert. I was really impressed by the extensive list of brands, from J. Crew to 3.1 Philip Lim. With a lot of the other online shopping sites, I always felt like I had to go one place for high-end, and another for everyday clothing. Also, the groups and celebrity look sections really make the whole browsing experience more like flipping through a magazine with your girlfriends. Plus, as the holiday season approaches, it’s good to know you can create your own registry (flashback to the SATC episode where Carrie ‘registers’ for just one pair of shoes).

After sorting through some of the thousands of items, I decided to put together my first ‘look’ – based on an outfit I recently wore to a wedding. ShopStyle makes it super easy to share any of your looks on your blog or just via e-mail. Below is my “look” in a handy blog widget!

Steve Madden at ShopStyle

I have a feeling this site may become as addictive as Facebook, when it first came out. I can plan my fall wardrobe easily online now. No more tearing out pages from Vogue!

Technology and Poverty – Blog Action Day

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Today is Blog Action Day 2008, and the topic is poverty. The goal of this online coordinated event is to have as many people blog about one topic on the same day to bring awareness to an issue. While poverty is a serious and complex issue to tackle, I will just explore a few ways that technology is having a positive impact.

For many of us, a cell phone is a daily convenience that we are not often without. They have, however, become a thriving business for those in poverty-stricken villages. The Village Phone Project has brought phones to remote villages, eliminating what in the past might have been a six-mile trip to use a phone. Phone operators charge others for the use of their phone within the village, which benefits everyone.clip_image002

Locally, you can visit the public library and use the computer to access the Internet. This simple convenience is easy access to information that can improve the life of someone in need. Someone looking for a job can save the money on gas or public transportation by applying online in most cases. Again, a simple convenience for me or you may make a big impact for someone living in poverty.

The Dell (PRODUCT) RED is another way that technology is helping improve the lives of those in poverty. Purchasing your own (RED) branded product from Dell contributes to efforts to help eliminate AIDS in Africa, where life-sustaining treatment for an individual costs only 40 cents a day. Helping keep people with HIV/AIDS healthy and productive also fights poverty by enabling those individuals to continue supporting themselves and their families.

While technology now plays a role in all aspects of life, it is the impact that it has on one’s life that makes it a gift. With the state of our global economy and the uncertain outlook for the future, making readily available and affordable technology will continue to have a positive impact for those who need it.

A Necklace By Any Other Name

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

The folks at Gresso have done it again. They have created the must-have, price-is-no-object tech-cessory of the season. You may remember my post on the Price-is-no-Object Mobile Phone, showcasing their $14,000 USD African blackwood and 2.53K diamond phone. This time they have created a necklace and not just any necklace–an $8,000 USD wearable flash drive that stores 192GB necklace.

clip_image002

clip_image004

Spotted by Trend Hunter, this necklace is like their mobile phones, being made of 200-year-old exotic African hardwood crusted with diamonds and 18K gold. Their designs are simple on their pyramid-shaped pendant. And with only 99 of these necklaces made, they really are intended for only the lucky few.

While these pendants may not be the top on my list, I commend Gresso for continuously combining the worlds of luxury and technology. I wonder what they will come up with next. Maybe an African blackwood computer case to fit my Dell XPS M1330?

If money was no object, what tech-cessory would you like to see in African blackwood and diamonds?

I Dare You to Hug Me: For the Inventive Chic Geek

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Technology and clothes are becoming much more synonymous than they were 5 to 10 years ago. Designers are planning wardrobes around smart phones, laptops and MP3 players and embedding technology into the clothes to improve functionality or give it some flare. Whether you’re someone who simply wants to always be connected or you like to geek out and make a statement about where you stand with technology, it’s getting easier to find the right items to add to your wardrobe. But what if you want to do something with your clothes that isn’t quite available yet?

clip_image002

Ashley Laurel Wilson from CIO Magazine recently wrote a great article about her Top 9 wearable technology picks. One of her picks was the Lily Pad Starter Kit, which is a microcontroller board that you can sew into your clothes and program to light up, make noise and more.

You can program sounds to make it giggle, say thank you, or vibrate when someone hugs you, or program the LED lights to light up when it senses darkness, through the light sensor included with the kit. On a practical side, you could even space out the lights in turn signal shapes on the back of a jacket and have each light up when you are making a turn on a bicycle.

For the chic geek who likes to be inventive or create one-of-a-kind pieces for their wardrobe, the possibilities would be endless.

What would you make your clothes do, if they could do anything? Looking forward to your thoughts and comments.
