When Your Photo Filing System Fails You

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

I’m excited to be posting what I hope will be the first of many blogs entries. You may notice in my bio that I’m a self-described “gadget girl” – actually, my husband calls me that, too. I’m always fascinated by the latest electronic tool that helps make life easier. I’m also a newly minted photography enthusiast and I’m not alone. After years of being told we have good photographic eyes, we’ve recently made the leap from a point-and-shoot camera to a full-blown digital SLR (dSLR).

Falling dSLR prices helped me come to terms with the intimidation factor of controlling the camera settings and I decided to take my digital memories to a whole new level. Like other “mamarazzi” out there, I am on a quest to make my new son the most photographed child in history. But all of that snapping comes at a price. No, digital is still cheaper than film. The price I’m referring to is your lost sanity when you can’t find that one adorable shot in the series of thousands of images you’ve shot and kept (after all storage is cheap, too) because your filing system has failed you.

Solution? You need software to assist with image management.

My recommendation? Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.

clip_image002

Now before you get concerned about seeing “Photoshop” in the name, just know that you don’t have to be a professional photographer to use Lightroom. It’s very user-friendly. Plus, I’m only recommending you immediately dive into one of five modules, the Library. With this module alone, you’re just a few clicks away from the brave new world of the photography enthusiast. You’ll create a true image database so you can:

  • Catalog images from multiple folders, drives or disks without changing their storage location,
  • Keyword tag images at import or after the fact,
  • Rate files to allow for quick viewing of only those magical moments,
  • Compare similar images side by side to quickly determine which to discard,
  • Feel comfortable about the camera in manual mode – Lightroom lets you teach yourself to improve your images by storing all of the camera settings that let you capture the best pictures,
  • Stop shooting in any image format other than RAW. You retain the most image information with this format and Lightroom lets you export to JPG with ease.

All these features will mean less time behind the computer screen sifting through images and more time behind the camera. If learning all of this sounds a bit overwhelming, there are many Web sites and books available for tips and tutorials, but my favorite is the video training available from Lynda.com. After you’ve mastered the Library module, you can move on to the Develop module, which lets you complete many of the same affects from Adobe Photoshop with a much flatter learning curve.

Lights…Camera…Panoramio-Enhanced Street Views

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

As of today, an engaging new dimension has been added to Google Street View. It’s the capability to view user photos that have been uploaded to Panoramio and precisely matched to Google Street imagery. It’s a great way to see some famous sites from new perspectives.

Check out the details over at the unofficial Google Operating System blog or directly from the company at Google LatLong Blog.

Hands-On With Dell’s Wasabi Ultramobile Photo Printer

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Yesterday, Dell began offering the latest in printer technology with the pocket-sized Wasabi PZ310 photo printer. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on one and test it out. I was totally impressed by the $99 device and the idea of not having to purchase any ink cartridges thanks to the Zink Zero Ink technology.

I can print from my mobile phone using Bluetooth wireless, which was a pleasant change since I can never find the correct cable. I also tried it out on a couple of Dell Inspiron Mini computers- the Mini 9 and 12. It took no time at all to connect and print- it really was easy to use.wasabi_pink_arm

Once I got the Wasabi home and showed it to my 16-year-old daughter I knew I was going to be talked into buying one. What was I thinking? She just so happened to have her computer on and wanted me to print some pictures for her to show her friends. Once she saw the 2×3-inch semi-gloss printed pictures she was on the phone telling her friends about how cool it was and how good the pictures came out.

I have no doubt that the Wasabi Ultramobile printer will be a HUGE HIT for everyone, but especially for teens and college students. It is compact (7 ounces) and prints in 55 seconds. The Zink or Magic paper that the pictures are printed on also have an adhesive back for sticking on a variety of places. They should also make for a great gift for someone- maybe even my daughter.

Eye-Fi, You Fi — We All Want the Eye-Fi

Monday, February 9th, 2009

I admit that downloading pictures from my digital camera is more of a hassle than it should be. I either cannot find the cable or I forget to put the SD card back in my camera once I have downloaded directly from it. Updating our Web site with pictures of the kids is a necessity for keeping all the relatives happy, so I was intrigued when I read that you can upload pictures from your camera wirelessly.

Eye-Fi is a memory card that allows you to wirelessly upload your photos automatically. There are several versions that allow for different activities. The Eye-Fi Home wirelessly connects to your home network and when your computer is turned on, delivers your pictures to the assigned folder on your computer or directly into iPhoto. The Eye-Fi Share uploads images on to your computer or social networking Web site while the Eye-Fi Explore allows you to upload from more than 10,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the nation.

If photos are a big part of your busy life, this might be a great solution. It is definitely on my wish list! Have you tried the Eye-Fi ? Let me know how you like it.

Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Friday, February 6th, 2009

If you have read the news this week about Dell offering exclusive Twitter deals, twitter_logo_125x29 but not sure where to get started with the social networking tool, Techno Glam has posted a Quick Twitter Guide for beginners.

The Domestic Diva posts Thank goodness for the Picture Keeper, which is a very neat device for backing up photos without much work. You almost do not even have to remember to back them up. It does it for you.

We all can use a little of this: Use Your Cell Phone’s Camera to Make Your Life Easier. My favorite is #4, which suggests taking a pic of your makeup or shampoo before going shopping so you remember which one to get!

Photographers: Tune In Marc Silber, Get Great Shots

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Editor’s note: Following is a recent conversation between Richard Binhammer, a.k.a. RichardatDell, and noted photographer/knowledge sharer Mark Silber.

Hi Marc, we’re thrilled to have you join us again at Dell’s Your Blog, a place we host for conversations about digital lifestyle. Thanks for joining us to talk digital photography.PhotoShow-Logo

My pleasure to be back, Richard.

Last time we chatted about key elements that make for great photographs, your perspectives on some of “the Masters of photography” like Ansel Adams, color and black and white photography, as well as some techniques and issues around protecting artists work.

You have embarked on an exciting new Web initiative, Silber Studios TV, your new photo show for photography and tips people can use.

What is the thinking behind your new program?

It all started with my workshops on photography. When I was preparing for them I would, of course, research the masters—you know it’s one thing to know how to do something yourself and quite another when you’re teaching. Some aspects of photography I’ve known so long that they seemed “instinctive,” but to get them across to students requires substance.

That’s when I went looking for video footage from some of the masters and found a lack of concise data about how you do it. So I decided to put my Photo Show together to get my audience directly in touch with some of the masters. My first show was with Ansel Adams’ son, Michael, in Yosemite. I was able to ask him the questions I would have loved to ask Ansel. But what was really cool is that they loaned me his unreleased footage where you’ll hear him talking about the “whole key” to a great photograph.

It sounds like the focus of the program has value for the “new” digital photographer, someone wanting to take better pictures, people who want a refresher course, as well as people who are interested in photography and want to hear and learn first-hand from some great photographers. Can you give us a flavor for the kinds of topics you’ll cover?

Now I’m continuing to follow the really excellent photographers and asking them how they get their great shots. In my last show, Chase Jarvis gives five secrets for his exceptional photos. This is how the shows roll out … I put my viewers in touch with these really exceptional photographers to they can an improve their craft.

How about a sneak peek for Your Blog readers? Who will we get to learn from? Give us a scoop?

I went out with Thomas Hawk on a cold December evening in the chilly winds of San Francisco Bay, where we shot him getting an amazing image of the Golden Gate Bridge. That’s our next show. Thomas actually waded out into the water! He gives his tips for getting his shots (No, you don’t have to freeze your behind off to follow along with the show!)

Marc Silber’s Photo Show and guests aside for a minute, what do you think is the biggest challenge for someone new to digital photography or photography in general?

Honestly, it’s staying clear of all the mysteries and geeky stuff. You can get great shots with a point-and-shoot or an iPhone. But that’s just it –you’ve gotta get out and shoot and shoot and shoot. I just blogged about this, “The Biggest Secret of Photography.” Read it and do the assignment I assigned. You’ll thank me.

If that is the biggest challenge, will Photo Show help us get past that challenge?

That’s the whole idea. I want to show you how to do it. How the guys who have made it get their shots and just follow their advice. Stay tuned for each episode and in between use what you’ve leaned and you will get better shots.

Is Photo Show about “photography” and getting great shots, or about “digital photography” processes and “how to” work in Photoshop, etc?

It’s about all aspects of photography. We’re in a digital age where most of the pros have moved to digital. But the fundamentals apply to any type of photography. We plan to check in with PhotoShop and Lightroom and get tips for our viewers.

Think of my Photo Show as your inside line into the world of photography, learning episode by episode to master this amazing medium. It’s a journey and we’re happy to be bringing our viewers along.

Anything else you want to add?

I’m thrilled to be producing and hosting my Photo Show. Heck, I’d do it for my own education and benefit—getting to places like Ansel Adam’s darkroom, or walking with Annie Leibovitz through her exhibit. But knowing that I’m helping our viewers become better with each show is a huge reward.

How about you, Marc, the photographer, not the teacher and sharer? What are you working on these days? Any shows coming up? Any books in the works? Special photo shoots?

Hmm, you want my insider stuff? I’m very involved with the show and now learning video production and editing. This is the future of photography, the convergence of photo-video, so I’m taking the leap just as I had to do years ago with digital.

I continue to learn and improve my craft and grow as a photographer daily. Yes, you’ll see some books growing out of my ebooks.

Photography has opened up so many doors for me. I’m continually amazed at seeing the world newly, “capturing the moment” and having the privilege of sharing these moments with others. What fun!

Cameras for Tots

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I’ve mentioned digital cameras for kids in the past and finally took the leap. My 3-year-old boys received the Little Tykes digital cameras for Christmas this year. I had a conversation with Hayden about his new gadget this weekend and thought I would share.

Me: Why do you like your camera?

Hayden: Because I like the light flashing.

Me: What do you like to take pictures of?

Hayden: Arthur and Coco and Daddy and Holden and you and you can take pictures of me.

Me: What is your favorite part?

Hayden: Looking on the computer to pick which one is favorite.

Me: Do you know what all the buttons are for?

Hayden: Take a picture of me now please.

I was surprised to learn that he enjoyed picking out his pictures on the computer over taking the pictures themselves. I also learned that three questions is probably the limit for an interview with a 3 year old. Here is Hayden’s favorite picture from this weekend:

Most pictures are grainy and many are even blurry because the kids do not hold the camera still. While it might bug me, it does not hamper the fun the kids have with the cameras!

Compact Photo Printers

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

I have not done scrapbooking since one-hour 35mm prints were a fast solution. After checking out these compact printers, I am thinking that this hobby is more fun now than what I remember. Canon has a new line of printers that are small, versatile and perfect for someone on-the-go.

The SELPHY ES2 is less than eight inches in height and depth. The ruler sitting in front of me says that is pretty tiny. Best of all, you can print pictures directly from your computer, camera or phone.

clip_image002

If you like the ES2, you might love the SELPHY CP770. This printer is made for shutterbugs on the go. You can take it with you and print pictures from your camera’s memory card. The handle and bucket make it easy to transport your photo paper or scrapbooking materials.

clip_image004clip_image006

What a great way to make instant gifts at family reunions or parties. Just bring some frames and take and print pictures to insert on the fly. Of course, these printers would be a great addition to anyone’s scrapbooking party!

A Familiar Name in Digital Photo Printing

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Most of us can remember the days when a photo enthusiast spent a fair chunk of change with a professional photo lab. A good lab not only developed your negatives and slides but would also put a great deal of effort into printing them. Getting color balance, brightness and contrast, and other tonal features of a photograph right were not the easiest tasks to accomplish in an amateur’s darkroom.

In the digital age, things aren’t all that different. Most of us aren’t exactly experts with photo editing software and the fact is minor differences in how LCD displays show us color can throw off your results. Photo quality paper isn’t cheap so every time your photo printer spits out an image with unexpected differences between what you wanted to see and what shows up on the printed page, it costs time and money and proves extremely frustrating.Inkjet Printer

This is why I am excited about the launch of Dell’s newest color photo printer, the P703w All-In-One Printer. This color inkjet printer uses Kodak Color Technology to provide outstanding 1,200 dpi color printing on Dell Premium Photo Paper. It uses a separate print head and ink tanks to produce superb color accuracy and excellent ink and paper economy. It also comes with an internal wireless network adapter for convenient use from anywhere in your home and if you have a router capable of Wi-Fi Protected Setup, the P703w supports that simple and secure method of getting it connected to your home network.

One of the best features of the P703w is the Dell Imaging Toolbox software. While this software is on our more conventional inkjet printers launching this year, the version packaged with the P703w has some unique features designed to take advantage of the printer’s superior photo capability.

The photo editing and printing features of the Dell Imaging Toolbox offer an array of very simple one-click tools that produce outstanding photos. The Kodak Perfect Touch feature instantly provides excellent contrast and brightness adjustments to your photos but you can also go in and tweak your pictures in great detail if you feel the need.clip_image002

The P703w is an excellent high-speed inkjet printer on plain paper, but make no mistake – the reason you will want this printer is for printing outstanding quality photographs on photo paper.

In my experience, you can’t find a better photo-quality printer without spending several times the $189199price. The Dell Imaging Toolbox software and the wireless network adapter are included in that price.
